Once upon a time in the Old Testament, God told a man to go. He told him to leave his country. He told him to leave his family.
And then something amazing happened…
The man went.
He took the original footsteps of faith.
This was the original trip to Israel.
If you grew up going to Sunday School you know who I am talking about: Father Abraham. You may even know the song, “Father Abraham had many sons and I am one of them.” Abraham became the father of the Jewish nation, the people of Israel. But even more than that, he is a forefather to all of us who have faith in Jesus.
The problem is many don’t grow up going to Sunday School. The generation coming of age today is illiterate when it comes to Holy Scripture, especially the Old Testament. Some churches don’t even expect you to bring your Bibles anymore! This is why I am passionate to bring the Bible to as many souls as I can. Or in this case, to bring them to the land where the much of the Bible took place.
The story of the Old Testament is setting up the good news of great joy that is for all of us. Abraham was given a promised child, but God asked him to offer up his one and only son. Again, Abraham responded to God with faith. He went to offer his son as a sacrifice on Mount Moriah. But at the last second, his son was spared.
Once upon a time in the New Testament, God so loved the world that he sent his one and only son. Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice on the same mountain Abraham went to. And at the last second, God’s Son was not spared. Jesus was judged for our sin there when he died for us on the cross. His death offers every soul a life of salvation.
Once upon a time I went to this land of Abraham, this land of Jesus, this land of Israel. I went up on the same mountain where Abraham’s son was spared and God’s son was not. Nine years ago I was blessed to visit this promised land and now I am blessed to go back. But this time it’s not just for me. This time I am bringing my wife. I am bringing a bus full of 40 brothers and sisters from our church Compass HB. And I would love to bring you too!
Stay tuned to this blog for updates from our trip to Israel! Also, Lord willing we will make a movie “The Footsteps of Jesus” which will show at Compass HB next weekend! Let us pray through this video many will follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
I can’t wait to feel the wind in my hair again as we sail on the sea of Galilee.
It was on those shores 2,000 years ago Jesus came upon some fisherman and called them to “Follow Me.”
From once upon a time until today, he is still calling for us to follow in his footsteps.
